A year ago, the Android OS could only claim to 3.8% of market share for mobile users,. However, that number grew by leaps and bounds throughout 2010 until, in November, they were cited as gaining a whopping 26% of the market share Of course, users had to come from somewhere, and although only a small number were pass thru from RIM and Apple, major it of contributor to Android’s success was Microsoft, whose market share has dropped significantly since last year.
Whereas Microsoft did a respectable 19% of subscribers with their Windows smartphones, they down to a miserable 9% in the most recent poll, despite having launched the Windows Phone 7 just weeks before the numbers were tallied And RIM gave up somewhere in the neighborhood of 4% of its market share (mostly to Google). Apple, didn’t actually lose any market share over the last year. In fact, they gained just under 1%, hardly a leap by any standards, and probably nowhere near what they hoped for. But its likely they did not forecast for Android’s astronomical jump in users that would place them into the second slot at just one point ahead of Apple .
